Overview

Stable Diffusion is the family of image models from Stability AI. Unlike most tools on this site, it isn't really a single app. It's a set of models you can download and run yourself, use through Stability's API, or get through Stability's managed platform for enterprise teams.
What Stability AI offers now
Stability AI's line-up has grown beyond images. The current Community License covers models including the Stable Diffusion 3.5 suite, SDXL Turbo, Stable Fast 3D and Stable Audio 3.0, with video and 3D models alongside. The company describes its image models as offering strong image quality, prompt adherence and style variety out of the box.
There are three main ways to use them:
- Self-hosted: download the weights and run them on your own hardware or cloud, with full control over your data and the option to fine-tune.
- Platform API: call Stability's hosted models from your own software with no infrastructure to manage.
- Brand Studio: a managed creative production platform for enterprise teams.
Stability also points to uses in marketing, gaming and entertainment, from on-brand campaign images to storyboarding and 3D worlds.
Licensing and cost
This is the part most people need to get right. According to Stability AI's license page (checked October 2026):
- The Community License is free for researchers, developers, small businesses and creators with less than US$1 million in annual revenue. It allows research, non-commercial and commercial use of the Core Models, and individuals creating at home don't need to pay.
- Fine-tuners can sell models built on the Core Models under the same US$1 million rule.
- Organisations above US$1 million in annual revenue that use the models commercially need an Enterprise License, with custom pricing, implementation support and optional custom training.

Who should use it
Developers, researchers and technically minded creators who want control: running models locally, training their own styles, or building products. If you just want to type a prompt and get a picture, a hosted tool is easier.
Pros: open weights you can run and fine-tune; free for most individuals and small companies; commercial use allowed for small businesses under the Community License.
Cons: self-hosting needs capable hardware and setup; licence rules change once revenue passes US$1 million; enterprise pricing isn't public.
