Overview

Artbreeder works differently from most prompt-box generators. Its best-known idea is mixing: you take images, blend them together and adjust their "genes", sliders for traits like age or colour, to steer the result. Artbreeder says it has 14 million users and 300 million images, and the site is published by a company called Morphogen.
The tools
- Splicer: the original tool for mixing images and editing their genes.
- Splicer2: a newer interface for mixing, branching and editing images.
- Collage: create an image out of simple shapes, pictures and text.
- Composer: image generation that is unlimited on Pro plans.
The approach suits people who think visually. Instead of rewriting a prompt over and over, you nudge an image towards what you want and branch off when you like a direction.
Community
Artbreeder is social by design. You can follow creators, enter daily themed contests and vote on entries, and join "remix parties" where people build on each other's images. That makes it a good source of ideas for character designers, writers and tabletop players looking for portraits.
Artbreeder Pro
You can sign up and try the tools before paying. Pro adds no ads, privacy controls, Google Drive sync, unlimited image generation in Composer, a fast mode for Splicer, faster rendering and higher-resolution downloads. The official pricing page lists these yearly plans (checked October 2026):
- Starter: $7.49 x 12 for 1,200 credits a year, about $0.07 per credit.
- Advanced: $15.99 x 12 for 3,300 credits, about $0.06 per credit.
- Champion: $30.99 x 12 for 8,400 credits, about $0.04 per credit.
Monthly billing is also available; check artbreeder.com/pricing for those rates, as they didn't show in our check. Artbreeder estimates credits in SDXL images (roughly ten per credit), so heavier models will use more.
Who it suits
Hobbyists, writers and game masters who want characters and concept art, and anyone who enjoys exploring variations rather than typing long prompts. For photoreal commercial work, a newer model platform will usually fit better.
Pros: a different, visual way of creating; strong for character portraits; active contests and remix culture.
Cons: the interface takes some exploring; monthly prices aren't clearly shown; credit estimates depend on the model you pick.
Alternatives
NightCafe is another community-led generator. Leonardo.Ai and Krea offer more modern models and editing.
